Lately I seem to find myself doing housework to Arabic music from the 1950’s and ‘60’s. I imagine I’m declaring love that surpasses understanding or reason while I iron shirts, and asking God for patience with a lover’s thick headedness while wiping down the countertops, complete with emphatic hand gestures and head tosses.
Souad Hosni’s “Ya Wad Ya Teel”/”You Cold Hearted Man!”
Released in the 1966 Egyptian film Saghira al il Hob, “Ya Wad Ya Teel” quickly became an Arabic classic, and was covered by several modern Arabic stars, such as Nancy Ajram and Haifa Wehbe.
Souad Hosni’s influence can be seen in modern Arabic singers’ performances and music videos, including Nancy Ajram’s similarly cute, innocent and mildly flirtatious performance which is very much like Hosni’s in this clip.
A cultural side note, notice that Hosni uses a Westerner (English) to emphasize the coldness of her paramour, implying that he is just as distant and calculated as they are. Ouch!
